Austin Salyer

The Austin M. Salyer Community Service Award honors the life, values, and legacy of Austin Salyer, a proud Bobcat whose unwavering commitment to service continues to inspire. A junior at Texas State University, Austin was pursuing a degree in criminal justice with a minor in military science. He was a devoted member of the Alpha Sigma Phi–Theta Iota chapter and served in the Texas State Army ROTC, with plans to commission as a U.S. Army officer and eventually serve in law enforcement and SWAT. Austin’s life was cut short on September 16, 2021, when he was struck by a stray bullet while sleeping in his off-campus apartment—a tragic loss that left a deep void in the hearts of all who knew him.

Guided by the simple but powerful motto instilled by his parents—Do the Right Thing—Austin lived with selflessness, humility, and compassion. In his own words, he aspired to "live for others," and that legacy now lives on through this award. Established in 2023 by the Texas State University Police Department, in partnership with Bonnie and Rodney Salyer and the nonprofit Leave No Victim Behind, the Austin M. Salyer Community Service Award recognizes students who embody his spirit of service. With your support, this endowed scholarship will provide a $1,000 annual award to a deserving student committed to making a difference. Every gift ensures that Austin’s light continues to shine, inspiring future generations of Bobcats to serve with integrity and heart.
