As a professor at Texas State University and a Distinguished President’s Associate, Dr. Helen Lowman believes deeply in the university’s ability to transform lives, strengthen communities, and prepare the next generation of leaders through education and public service.
For Dr. Lowman, supporting Texas State is both a professional commitment and a personal investment in the future of the institution and its students.
Through my work with students, I see firsthand the transformative impact the university has on individuals and communities. Supporting the President’s Fund felt like a meaningful way to invest in that mission at the institutional level.
Drawing from experience in public service and nonprofit leadership, Dr. Lowman recognizes the important role Texas State students will play in shaping the future of Texas and beyond. Her decision to become a Distinguished President’s Associate reflects a desire to support the university at a leadership level while helping ensure students have access to the opportunities and resources they need to succeed.
“Many of our students are first-generation, balancing significant responsibilities while pursuing their education,” Dr. Lowman said. “Strategic philanthropic support helps remove barriers, expand opportunities, and enhance the quality of the student experience.”
Rather than one defining moment, Dr. Lowman describes her commitment to giving as the result of years spent watching students grow in confidence, secure internships, and step into meaningful careers in public service and community leadership.
“Seeing that trajectory, from the classroom to meaningful public service roles, reinforces the importance of investing in the systems and support structures that make those outcomes possible.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Lowman hopes her giving will continue to strengthen Texas State’s role as a student-centered and outward-facing university that connects academic learning with real-world impact.
“Texas State is uniquely positioned to connect academic learning with real-world application, particularly in public service, policy, and community engagement,” she shared. “Supporting the President’s Fund helps provide the flexibility and resources needed to respond directly to the needs of students and strengthen the university’s role as a leader in preparing the next generation of professionals and civic leaders.”
Her message to others considering becoming President’s Associate is simple: philanthropy is an opportunity to actively shape the future of Texas State students and the communities they will one day serve.
“If you believe in expanding access to education, strengthening public service, and investing in future leaders, this is a meaningful and impactful way to contribute.”
